Event 55 – The Big One for One Drop

Event 55 was probably the most anticipated event of this year’s WSOP. The buy-in of $1,000,000 itself was enough to turn some heads. There were 48 players that ponied up the money to try their luck and skill at the first ever platinum bracelet in WSOP history. The first place prize of over $18 million is the largest prize in poker history not to mention in sports history. However, the real winner was the charity One Drop, which works to provide clean water to underdeveloped countries. Out of each $1 million buy-in, $199,999 went to the charity. Still there was a poker tournament to be played and winner to be determined.  When the final table was reached most of the chips belonged to two players, Antonio Esfandiari and Sam Trickett. One by one they would fall, business executives and poker players alike. Phil Hellmuth came very close to his 13th bracelet but fell just short when his A-10 would lose out to Trickett’s A-Q. Hellmuth was railed in 4th place pocketing over $2.6 million in prize money, which was the largest cash of his career. Hedge Fund manager David Einhorn was eliminated in 3rd place. He pledged to donate all of his winnings to City Year, which is educational focused non-profit organization. Esfandiari took a 2.5 to 1 chip advantage over Trickett going into heads up. It took less than 20 hands to decide a winner. Esfandiari dodged a flush draw and became the richest poker player in WSOP history.

NY Judge: Poker’s Not Gambling Under Federal Law

NEW YORK August 21, 2012 (AP)

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that poker is more a game of skill than chance and cannot be prosecuted under a law created to stop organized crime families from making millions of dollars from gambling.

The decision by Judge Jack Weinstein in Brooklyn was embraced by advocates of card games pushing to legalize Internet poker in the United States. The judge relied extensively on the findings of a defense expert who analyzed online poker games.

The ruling tossed out a jury’s July conviction of a man charged with conspiring to operate an illegal underground poker club, a business featuring Texas Hold’em games run in a warehouse where he also sold electric bicycles. There were no allegations in the case that organized crime was involved or that anything such as money laundering or loansharking occurred.

“Because the poker played on the defendant’s premises is not predominately a game of chance, it is not gambling” as defined in the federal law, the judge wrote in a lengthy decision that traced the history of poker and federal laws to combat illegal gambling.

Prosecutors did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Dammit, He Does Exist!

The last regular game of the third quarter took place this week. There were a few familiar faces missing (Troy, Mark, Daggum and Jerry), and an appearance of a long-time regular (Ricky). That left JD, Dan, Alan, Kyle, Richard, Buzz and Ricky sitting around the table in Kyle’s garage to battle it out. Here’s how it all went down.

Surprisingly the game was fairly mellow for the first couple of blinds considering Buzz, Richard and Alan were seated next to each other(Richard and Alan were to Buzz’s left, I mean right, I mean to his left which would be his right). This week Kyle had the distinction of being the first one knocked out. Kyle went all-in with Kh-5h and a short chip stack. JD called with his Ah-Qh and saw his Ace high hold up. Kyle went back to shooting pool against himself, which turned out to be a bigger challenge than Buzz was earlier in the night.

Speaking of Buzz, he was the next player to fall to JD. Buzz was playing with a short stack for quite a while and holding his own. He decided to make his stand with a J-7 and got a call from JD and his A-10. The turn ended up putting Buzz out when an Ace hit. Sulking from the loss, and losing one single game of 9-ball three different times, he went home.

Richard was the next one to flex his, err, muscle. With his eye on the points win for the third quarter he went after Alan and the extra two points for the bounty. Alan went all-in with an As-8s and the Pokersauras called with his K-J. A king hit on the flop giving Richard top pair, but it also had a spade. Another spade hit on the turn giving Alan a flush draw. The river was a blank for Alan and Richard’s kings held up.

The next one out was Dan, but not before making a great read in a heads-up hand with Ricky. Dan hit two pair on the river but felt a bit of a trap from the Poker God. After some careful thinking Dan folded and showed the two pair. Ricky, being the gentleman that he is, reciprocated and showed his trip 7’s. Dan was down to his last 22 in chips when he made a hand against JD. However, this time two pair would not be kind to him. JD, the overwhelming chip leader at this point, put Dan all-in and he called with his two pair. JD flipped over a Q-10 and ended up hitting 3 cards to make a straight. Another bad beat for Magz. (Kyle “Care-ful Bear” was dealing and got his revenge on Dan for last week’s shenanigans)

The Poker God had a good showing in his first game back in almost 5 months, but like everyone else he couldn’t hold off the monster known as JD. Ricky put all his chips in with an A-10 and was called by JD and his pocket 3’s. The flop, turn and river were all blanks for Ricky and JD claimed another victim. Ricky left to crash on someone’s couch.

It was down to the Chip Nazi and the Pokersauras. After some of the comments regarding their lives’ behind closed doors we knew that JD was going to make this short and quick and Richard was only looking out for himself. After a bit of foreplay Pokersauras shimmied in all his chips with a Q-J. JD quickly (see, told you) called him with his A-5. JD would out-flop Richard, and then the cards were flipped over. The flop would come 4-5-8, giving JD a pair of 5’s. The turn was a six. The river came out a four, giving JD two pair and the win.

From our friends at AverageGuyEntertainment.com:

Most of you have been to a party where “that guy” shows up. You may love or hate him. If you don’t remember a gathering with this greaser (literally), it was likely you! Who are we kidding? We love him.

Rock Island police arrested a man found naked and covered in cooking spray early Monday in the downtown area.

Officers responded to the call of a naked man at 3:27 a.m. in the 2200 block of 3rd Avenue, where they found him carrying a pair of shorts.

Rock Island Deputy Chief of Police Jeff VenHuizen said the man, Chad William Forber, 41, of Blue Grass, told officers he had taken off his shorts because they were too big and would not stay on.
