The Round Up: How to Fix Pro Wrestling

wars

Gone are the days of faces struggling to keep the company name honored while the NWO spray paints their letters on your back and throws up the wolf pack hand sign. Here are the days of wrestlers winning by sock puppet knockout and the return of cartoon character entertainers. True, there are many more choices in today’s television era, but the quality of professional wrestling has dropped to a point similar to the days before Ted Turner purchased WCW, creating the Monday Night Wars. During the peak of 90′s wrestling viewership would reach 8 million people per show. Now Monday Night Raw struggles to hit 3 million while TNA Impact and Smackdown hover around the 1 million range. Can professional wrestling recover and once again provide the water cooler chat on Tuesdays built from an exciting storyline or has the audience permanently moved on?

The Problem:

WWE has embraced the PG “attitude” in an attempt to grow a new audience, an audience of 9 year olds. If the show doesn’t appeal to the 9 year old’s parents does the channel change to USA? The ratings would say, “No.” Characters like The Goon (an angry hockey player), Viscera (a tattooed big man that switched between face and heel), Koko B. Ware (a parrot loving bright tight performer) and Doink the Clown have been replaced by Antonio Cesaro (a disgruntled rugby player), Brodus Clay (a tattooed big man that switched between heel and face), Kofi Kingston (a former Jamaican bright tight performer) and Santino Marrella ( a clown with sock puppets). The days of Vince McMahon fondling Trish Stratus in a backstage vignette have been replace by curtain jerking Superstars dancing in unison to another Superstars entrance music.

TNA is filmed in the same studio where Mickey Mouse performs. They have a history of scooping up the trash that WWE leaves behind after their best days are behind them (Ken Shamrock, RVD, Matt and Jeff Hardy and more). An inability or lack of creativity has kept them from growing their own Superstars. Bad influences have effected their direction. Guys like Vince Russo, who no longer works for TNA and Eric Bischoff have failed to live up to high expectations.

The Resolution:

The Round Up: RKOverdose

After failing his 2nd drug test, Randy Orton was suspended from the WWE for 60 days. The assumed drug that caused his suspension is Dianabol, an oral steroid. Rumors immediately spread that the WWE was considering terminating the lucrative ten year contract Orton signed two years ago. The problem with keeping/pushing Orton is the third strike policy involving steroids in the WWE. How does the company continue to keep him in the main event picture with the constant risk of a third and final strike?

Perhaps the person most interested in the possible developments of Orton’s future is TNA President, Dixie Carter. TNA has a history of picking up stars produced by WWE, even taking a chance on another wrestler that failed drug tests in the Vince McMahon run company. TNA has grabbed up the likes of Christian, Devon, Bully Ray, Mr. Anderson, Tommy Dreamer, Gail Kim, Deangelo Dinero and Kurt Angle. They have shown that a history of drug abuse is merely a small obstacle in the course of attempted wrestling ratings by employing Jeff Hardy. Why wouldn’t TNA quickly snatch up a top draw in his prime, Randy Orton?

Round Up: Kerry Wood; Over the Limit

over

WWE presents “Over the Limit” on pay-per-view from the PNC Center in Raleigh, N.C. The WWE has made what is typically filler ppv into a show worth watching with two interesting matches. Let’s take a look at the matches and possible outcomes ( I feel like I’ve wrote something similar before).

Zack Ryder vs. Kane - Zack used his Internet show to not only save his career, but push himself into the main event level. However, a few months after he reached the possible pinnacle of his career, Zack finds himself where he actually belongs, wrestling in the free youtube.com pre-show match. His opponent, Kane, continues to wrestle at a high level despite his age.

Prediction - Zack picks up the win with a rough ryder to the shock of himself and the crowd.

WWE Tag Team Championship – Kofi Kingston & R-Truth (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger - The WWE seemingly continues to test Dolph and his patience by putting him in matches below the level he should be involved. Does anybody remember Jack Swagger as World Champion? Kofi finds himself with another partner after Evan Bourne enjoyed “high flying” a little too much. Evan’s replacement, R-Truth has a history of addiction himself.

The Round Up: 134>88

Following his 17th place finish at Darlington, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. extended his losing streak to 134 races. Yet NASCAR fans continue to vote an overwhelmingly underachieving driver as favorite. The love affair for Dale Jr. compares to the relation North Siders have for the Chicago Cubs. Dale Jr. has become the lovable loser of NASCAR. Even the financial backing of the New York Yankees of NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, can’t help Dale Jr. find the winner’s circle. Drivers with far less funding and possibly more talent have won races since Dale Jr’s last victory on June 15, 2008 at Michigan. He happened to use mileage strategy to win the LifeLock 400 under green, white, checker circumstances.

Anybody know who this is? He's won more than Jr. since 2008.

Less notable drivers to win since Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

  • Trevor Bayne
  • Marcos Ambrose
  • David Ragan
  • Regan Smith
  • Casey Mears
  • Paul Menard
  • David Reutimann
  • Brian Vickers
  • Juan Pablo Montoya

As Dale Jr. slowly sputters into another disappointing season, it may be in the best interest of Henderick Motorsports to begin to look in another direction. If winning and making money are the goals of any franchise, especially one as heavily corporate sponsored as NASCAR, then investing in a better future is a more viable option.

Better driver options to drive for Hendrick Motorsports

The Round Up: Not so Rosey Outlook

rose

Maybe Chicago is cursed. Jay Cutler dropped to a phantom knee injury during the NFC Championship Game. Not to be outdone, Derrick Rose blows out his ACL on a jump step and unceremoniously ends the Bulls chances of winning the NBA Championship. Knee injuries have ruined several great careers in the Windy City, including Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus. Is Rose next? The biggest question has been, “Why was he still in the game?” Bulls Coach, Tom Thibodeau stated, “The team needed to learn how to close out games.” The #1 overall seed had clearly closed out several games during the season and Rose was not a part of many of them. They were 32-7 with Rose and 18-9 without. It’s hard to question a coach that is likely to win Coach of the Year two seasons in a row, but Rose is injury prone and the Bulls were up by 12 with a minute remaining when the tear that ruined their chances happened. The NBA needs Rose to stay healthy as his style, charisma and talents are great for a game that is slowly climbing in popularity, a popularity not seen since the Jordan, Bird and Magic days. Rose could be the next Jordan or the next Sam Bowie.

The Injury:

The Odds:

The Bulls have dropped from 7-2 odds to win the NBA championship to 15-2, while LeBron James and the Miami Heat have jumped from 2-1 favorites to 3-2.

Bonehead of the Week:

The Round Up: Rookies, Rebounds and Round 2

draft

Another exciting week of sports is in front of this week, including the NFL Draft, NBA Playoffs and NHL Conference semi-finals.

The NHL playoffs have been filled with big scores, big hits and plenty of penalty minutes, especially from the Flyers / Penguins series. After 55 combined goals and over 200 penalty minutes, the Flyers joined St. Louis and the Nashville Predators in advancing to the second round. The Predators made quick work of the Detroit Red Wings in what may have been a passing of the torch in the Western Conference. All other series are within a game of determining who moves on and will be concluded by Thursday. The most stunning upset may be courtesy of the L.A. Kings who have an opportunity to prove the President’s Cup means nothing in the playoffs as they are on the verge of eliminating the Vancouver Canucks. Let the Canadian rioting begin, eh! Bold Prediction: No team that  has won the Stanley Cup in the last two decades will remain in the playoffs after the opening round.

The NBA joins the playoff frenzy this Saturday with opening round games. If the playoffs began today your match-ups would be:

Western Conference

  • 1. Spurs vs 8. Jazz
  • 2. Thunder vs. 7. Mavs
  • 3. Lakers vs. 6. Nuggets
  • 4. Clippers vs. 5. Grizzlies

Eastern Conference

  • 1. Bulls vs. 8. 76ers
  • 2. Heat vs. 7. Knicks
  • 3. Pacers vs. 6. Magic
  • 4. Celtics vs. 5. Hawks

The Round Up: Deadliest Catch Up On Sleep

catch

After a recent conversation with AGP Writer, Dan Martin, we narrowed down the best sports to take a nap during. Your choices are The PGA, Major League Soccer, NASCAR and Major League Baseball. All have there benefits and downsides of catching an afternoon siesta. We have painstakingly gone through the trouble of deciding the plus and minus of giving your eyelids a rest from each sport. Read thoroughly and weigh your options carefully before voting on the poll to your right.

PGA – Benefits:

  • The Final round of the Masters will last five hours. Plenty of time to rest and catch the last few holes. Not to mention, the calm approach used by the soothing voices of Jim Nantz and company are a fantastic sleep aid.

PGA – Downside:

  • Sleeping through a double eagle like the one Louis Oosthuizen hit will result in catching it on SportCenter after hearing about it, instead of living in the moment. (See below)

The Round Up: Wrestlemania 28 Preview & Predictions

28

Wrestlemania is without a doubt the biggest event each year in professional wrestling. For wrestling fans today is Super Bowl Sunday. No other wrestling event draws the attention or excitement of Wrestlemania. This year is no different as the WWE has done an excellent job of building a solid card from top to bottom. This is the AGP preview and predictions for Wrestlemania XXVIII from Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida 6pm central on PPV.

Randy Orton vs Kane: It’s hard to say if Kane would’ve made it onto the Wrestlemania card if not for an injury to Wade Barrett. Randy Orton was “injured” by Barrett and made his comeback a month later by attacking the Brit. Unfortunately, Barrett sustained a dislocated elbow on an episode of Monday Night Raw shortly after Orton’s return. In steps Kane who had no storyline working for him and the match was set. Orton and Kane have been feuding over who is more bad-ass and the winner will be determined tonight.

Prediction: Kane is one of a handful of wrestlers rumored to be nearing retirement, while Orton is still in his prime. Orton needs the win more and attains it with an RKO from the top rope.

Team Teddy vs Team Johnny: This is the match that replaced Money in the Bank and establishes which GM controls both shows, Teddy Long or John Laurinaitis. Team Johnny consists of The Miz, Drew McIntyre, Mark Henry, Jack Swagger, David Otunga and Dolph Ziggler. Team Teddy has Zack Ryder, Kofi Kingston, Booker T, R-Truth, Great Khali and Santino Marella. On paper this is a total mis-match as Team Johnny has the superior talent (with the exception of Drew). Johnny is the much more entertaining and polarizing General Manager. He also has held the position a shorter length of time. As GM’s go, WWE likes to change them up frequently and Teddy has been around longer, making him the more likely to lose.

Prediction: The winner is no one! The match ends in a double disqualification when the two GM’s interfere, causing total chaos and the match to be thrown out.

The Round Up: Not Out of the Woods Yet

woods

What has happened in your life since November 2009? Tiger Woods had an incident or two that may or may not have been highly publicized. He has struggled to find his game since. However, today he has a chance to win his first PGA Tour event in 30 months. Tiger holds a 1 stroke (-11) lead over Graeme McDowell heading into the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Tiger has won six times here and is holding the final round lead for the first time since the 2009 BMW Championship, an event he eventually won. Tiger has held the lead heading into the final round 52 times in his career. He won 48 of those times. Watch Tiger chase his 72nd win today on NBC at 1:30pm. Prediction – Woods wins by 2 strokes (-14)

Bonehead move of the Week

  • For the first time there is a tie for the “honor” of being Bonehead of the Week. First, the Jacksonville Jaguars had an opportunity to do something they’ve rarely done as an NFL franchise, sell seats. The only thing more embarrassing than their uniform color scheme is the stadium during Sunday home games. Tarps cover corners of a venue that is often more empty than full. Trading for Tim Tebow would’ve brought the hometown hero back to his college stomping grounds and added much needed excitement to a stale team. This polarizing player is a hero in Florida and could have breathed air into a suffocating team. Instead, the Jags let the Jets outbid them for Tebow’s services. The only city happier than New York to have Tebow is Los Angeles. Prediction – This is where the Jags will be moving within two years.
  • Kuwait managed to do as much research as I’ve been accused of doing by wrestling fans when they played the Borat version of the Kazakhstan national anthem after shooting team member, Maria Dmitrienko won a gold medal in an event there. Kazakhstan has demanded an apology from Kuwait. Here is the video:

The Round Up – Special Edition: Peyton Passes on the Titans

US PRESSWIRE Sports

LeBron James left Cleveland and took his talents to South Beach. Cavalier fans burned his jersey and effigy. Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie. Women scorned the Hollywood hunk for dumping a sweetheart. Hulk Hogan left the Hulkamaniacs and joined the NWO. Thousands of fans threw five dollar sodas and seven dollar beers into the ring. I left Wrestlenewz to avoid the haters. Nobody noticed… All of these incidents pale in comparison as to how Titan fans feel after their prodigal son chose the Denver Broncos over the Tennessee Titans.

Peyton Manning informed Titans owner, Bud Adams, that he was passing over the franchise to join the Broncos. The State of Tennessee rolled out the red carpet to entice the greatest quarterback in NFL history to join a team that has struggled in recent years to break the .500 mark. The team reportedly offered part ownership after he retires. Nissan offered a special edition Titan truck, while Shoney’s offered pancakes! Who could possibly refuse free pancakes? Peyton can.
